Island Greetings, fellow travelers! If you’re seeking a family-friendly adventure on the island, look no further than the Barbados Wildlife Reserve. While it may not be within the immediate vicinity of Oistins Barbados, the island’s compact size ensures that reaching any attraction is just a short car ride away. This excursion is a must-do for families with children or anyone intrigued by native animals—a chance to experience the captivating wildlife of Barbados up close.
Barbados Wildlife Reserve: A Living Sanctuary
Spanning four acres, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve is a haven dedicated to research and conservation. Distinct from traditional zoos, the reserve allows its inhabitants to roam freely within their natural habitat. The optimal time to witness the vibrant wildlife is around two o’clock when feeding time beckons. Wander through the facility and observe these creatures in their element. Some of the captivating animals you can encounter include:
1. The Green Monkey With golden-green fur and pale hands and feet, the green monkeys of Barbados exhibit an enchanting appearance. Their tail tips, cheek whiskers, and thigh backs bear a striking golden-yellow hue.
2. The Mara Resembling a long-legged rabbit, the Mara is a larger relative of the guinea pig—a fascinating creature to behold.
3. The Iguana Sporting a distinctive row of spines, known as a dewlap, running down its back to its tail, the Barbados iguana boasts unique characteristics. It also features a “third eye” on its head that senses brightness without discerning details.
4. The Caiman These small-sized crocodilians, often spelled Cayman, are discernible from alligators by traits such as relatively longer, slender teeth and the absence of a bony septum between their nostrils.
5. The Parrot Often perched or climbing in trees, Barbados parrots grace the reserve with their colorful presence.
6. The Peacock Though frequently referred to as peacocks, these splendid birds are actually peafowl—males are the ones adorned with iridescent plumage.
7. The Tortoise Equipped with shells that serve as protection from predators, tortoises feature a carapace (top part) and plastron (underside).
8. The Brocket Deer Small to medium-sized with stout bodies and distinctive large ears, the brocket deer is an intriguing inhabitant of the reserve.
