Island Greetings, nature enthusiasts! Exploring Oistins Barbados and its surrounding beauty means immersing yourself in the island’s unique wildlife. From charming green monkeys to majestic sea turtles, Barbados hosts a diverse array of creatures that add to the island’s allure. Let’s take a closer look at some of the remarkable wildlife you might encounter during your Barbados vacation.

Barbados Green Monkey: A Symbol of the Island

As you traverse the island’s landscapes, you’re likely to cross paths with the iconic Barbados green monkey. These enchanting creatures arrived on the island from West Africa around 350 years ago. Over the centuries, environmental differences and evolution have given rise to distinctive features in the Barbados monkeys, setting them apart from their West African counterparts.

Found primarily in parishes like St. John, St. Joseph, St. Andrew, and St. Thomas, where lush vegetation thrives, the green monkeys have also been spotted in St. Peter, St. James, and Christ Church. If you’re staying near our condos, you might even glimpse these monkeys amidst the vegetation. Adorned with a brownish grey fur coat accented by yellow and green highlights, they appear green, hence the name ‘green monkey.’ Their diet primarily consists of plants and fruits, and while they are generally harmless, it’s best to observe them from a respectful distance.

Barbados Sea Turtles: Majestic Ocean Dwellers

Barbados offers an exceptional opportunity for swimmers and divers to encounter its beloved sea turtles. Swimming alongside these gentle creatures is a cherished experience for many visitors. The island’s waters are home to three prominent species of sea turtles: — Green turtle — Hawksbill turtle — Leatherback turtle

In 1998, the Barbadian government imposed stringent protection measures for sea turtles, making it illegal to catch or possess any turtle species or their products, such as shells and eggs. These measures were crucial in preserving the sea turtle populations, as these magnificent creatures were becoming endangered. The hawksbill and leatherback turtles are categorized as critically endangered, while the green turtles are classified as endangered. You can often spot them near Mount Standfast close to the Lone Star Restaurant in St. James parish.

Barbados Lizards: Everywhere You Look

Of all the island’s wildlife, lizards are the most ubiquitous, gracing every corner of Barbados. Among the six main lizard species, three are particularly common. The vibrant green lizard, known locally as the “cock lizard,” is recognizable by the male’s vividly colored throat fan, used both to ward off potential predators and attract females. While they may make their way indoors occasionally, they pose no threat.

When encountering Barbados wildlife, it’s essential to maintain a respectful and non-intrusive approach. Observing them from a distance ensures both your safety and theirs. The island’s wildlife adds to the charm of your vacation, offering glimpses of its natural inhabitants.
